As a Ph.D. candidate at the Karolinska Maarten Ligtenberg is perusing immunotherapeutic treatments for cancer patients.
There are two paths to treat patients with immunotherapy, namely active and passive immunity. Using DNA vaccination, in combination with electroporation, Maarten actively initiates anti-tumor immune responses in his in vivo mouse models. The other strategy Maarten uses is to reprogram human white blood cells to become specific for tumor cells. This passive immunotherapy approach has recently hit the popular news, such as this New York Times article, by storm. He keeps fellow colleagues & people up to date on his learnings & methodologies through his immunotherapy blog.
When Maarten is not laboring in the lab or brainstorming bright new solutions and approaches to immunotherapy, he enjoys traveling the world. With his girlfriend Mindy, who has recently started a traineeship at ADM, they have already visited a host of countries and are looking to visit many more.
